St Claudine Thevenet

Newsletter Week 8

Term 1, 25 March 2025

Kia Ora, Talofa lava, Bula vinaka, Namaste, Taloha Ni, Malo e lelei, Ni hao, Kia Orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Kumusta, Namaste

Last week we hosted the Special Catholic Character Evaluation Team. The three days gave us the chance to showcase what it is we do at St Claudine’s. On Monday our Kapa Haka Group led the powhiri- they were amazing. Maia Morgan, one of our Cultural Leaders, welcomed the visitors with her whaikorero- she was outstanding and set the bar high for the rest of the week. The team reviewed our Religious Education Programme, our classrooms, our Policies and our practices. They interviewed the leadership team, The RE Team, some support staff, a friend of the school from the Parish, the Student Council and Māori students from Year 7/8 . On the final day they acknowledged some of the great things they saw and heard. We are looking forward to the report. Once we have received the report we will share it with you.

On Friday we held our in school EOTC event. Fortunately the weather improved so we could all get out of our classrooms and engage in some exciting activities. Thanks to the teachers who organised all of the activities and to our House leaders who supported their house groups as they moved around the stations.

Take a look at the EOTC Album to see what the students got up to.

Have a great week

A Special Invitation

We are soon beginning our Sacramental Journey and this year we would like to offer a special invitation for Baptism. We are happy to support whānau who wish to have their child baptised by having a school Baptism programme and celebrating the sacrament of baptism together. If your child (Year 4 and above) has been baptised in another Christian Church and you would like them to join the Sacramental Journey they do not need to be baptised again- they will just be able to be initiated into the Catholic Church.

Whether you have been baptised or are wishing to be baptised and you would like to join the Sacramental Journey please complete the link for the registration form.

Attendance Step Process

As you are aware the Government has set achievement targets for all schools across the country. Their expectation is that students attend school for 90% of the year.
When levels of achievement drop below this level there are steps we, as a school, are required to take.
Step One:
Attendance is Worrying
(If your child has been absent for up to 10 days in a term)
You will receive a letter to let you know your child’s attendance rate and will be requested to meet with the principal to discuss the issues related to getting your child to school. We want to know what we can do to support you to improve your child’s attendance.
Step Two:
Attendance is Concerning
(If your child has been absent for up to 15 days in a term)
You will receive a letter to let you know your child’s attendance has not improved enough to meet the expectations.
This letter will let you know how many days your child has been absent and review the steps we agreed to improve attendance.
It will also let you know that your child has been referred to the Ministry Attendance Services. You will be contacted by an Attendance Officer who will work with you to improve your child’s attendance.
Step Three:
Attendance is A Serious Concern
(If your child has missed more than 15 days of school in a term)
You will receive a letter to update your child’s attendance and be advised of Section 36 of the Education and Training Act which requires a student to attend school whenever it is open- Section 244 states that a parent of that student commits an offence if they do not attend as required by Section 36.
You will be asked to attend a hui with the principal as soon as possible.

Student Council 2025

The Student Council has been working very hard over the last few weeks to create their vision, principles and goals for the year.
They have elected their lead team:
Chairperson: Maia Morgan
Secretary: Lithik Yogesh
Treasurer: Andreana Baldozano
Vision:
We believe in a school that is inclusive, faith filled and grateful
A school that
  • welcomes everyone
  • celebrates diversity
A school that
  • prays together
  • follows in the footsteps of Jesus
A school where we
  • take care of property
  • acknowledge those who provide for and support us
Principles:
As a Student Council:
  • We respectfully and confidently participate in meetings
  • We are always prepared and enthusiastic
  • We listen to each other
  • We encourage each other to be honest and share their ideas
The council is divided into three groups-
Welcome and Inclusion
Special Character
Gratitude

They are in the process of planning their first action- in this process they learn about planning together- identifying what needs to be done, by when, by whom and what resources they need. It is a great skill for them to learn and they are all on track to have their first action completed by the end of the term. It will then be on to bigger and better things as they grow in confidence and leadership.

Digital Safety

All students in our school participate in a Digital Safety Programme at the beginning of each year. These lessons must be completed prior to students using a school Chromebook or iPad.
We take digital safety very seriously and students are well aware of the expectations of use and how they must behave online. We can manage the in school digital use but their use outside of school is your responsibility to monitor- We know this can be challenging however when the online behaviour at home impacts on others at school it can be far more difficult for us to deal with.
The link below may be of use to you as you manage your child’s access to social media platforms.
